Windows takes a long time to shutdown

Problem

When you shutdown Windows, it takes a long time to do so whilst hanging on the message “Shutting down”.

Solution

  1. Click the Start button (Windows XP users should then click Run).
  2. Type regedit and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
  3. Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\
  4. On the right hand side, double click on “ClearPageFileAtShutdown”.
  5. Change the value from 1 to 0 and press OK.
  6. Close the Registry Editor.
