This article applies to users who download Mac OS X Lion via the App Store.
- Once downloaded, go to your Applications folder.
- Ctrl + Click / Right click on “Install Mac OS X Lion” and click “Show Package Contents”.
- Open the Contents folder.
- Open the SharedSupport folder. You will see the file “InstallESD.dmg”.
- Copy and Paste the file to the Desktop.
- Go to your Applications folder.
- Open the Utilities folder.
- Double click on Disk Utility.
- Once it has loaded, drag the InstallESD.dmg file from your Desktop onto the left sidebar of Disk Utility.
- You can now burn it to disc or create your own Lion USB:
- To burn to disc:
- Click on the InstallESD.dmg file in the sidebar so that it becomes highlighted.
- Click the Burn button located at the top of the window.
- You will prompted to insert a blank disc. You will need a blank DVD.
- Once the disc is in, click the Burn button.
- The disc will eject once the burn has completed.
- To create a USB install drive:
- Click on the InstallESD.dmg file in the sidebar so that it becomes highlighted.
- Click the Restore tab.
- Insert a USB drive. If it is not blank, then it will be erased if you continue.
- When the USB drive appears in the left sidebar of Disk Utility, drag it onto the Destination field.
- Click the Restore button.
- When prompted, click the Erase button.
- You may be prompted for your password. If so, type it in and click OK.
- To burn to disc:

- To boot from the disc, hold C (with the disc in) when turning on your Mac.
- To boot from the USB, hold down alt on startup and click on the USB drive when you are prompted to choose a drive to boot from.
