Create your own Mac OS X Lion DVD or USB

This article applies to users who download Mac OS X Lion via the App Store.

  1. Once downloaded, go to your Applications folder.
  2. Ctrl + Click / Right click on “Install Mac OS X Lion” and click “Show Package Contents”.
  3. Open the Contents folder.
  4. Open the SharedSupport folder. You will see the file “InstallESD.dmg”.
  5. Copy and Paste the file to the Desktop.
  6. Go to your Applications folder.
  7. Open the Utilities folder.
  8. Double click on Disk Utility.
  9. Once it has loaded, drag the InstallESD.dmg file from your Desktop onto the left sidebar of Disk Utility.
  10. You can now burn it to disc or create your own Lion USB:
    • To burn to disc:
      1. Click on the InstallESD.dmg file in the sidebar so that it becomes highlighted.
      2. Click the Burn button located at the top of the window.
      3. You will prompted to insert a blank disc. You will need a blank DVD.
      4. Once the disc is in, click the Burn button.
      5. The disc will eject once the burn has completed.
    • To create a USB install drive:
      1. Click on the InstallESD.dmg file in the sidebar so that it becomes highlighted.
      2. Click the Restore tab.
      3. Insert a USB drive. If it is not blank, then it will be erased if you continue.
      4. When the USB drive appears in the left sidebar of Disk Utility, drag it onto the Destination field.
      5. Click the Restore button.
      6. When prompted, click the Erase button.
      7. You may be prompted for your password. If so, type it in and click OK.
    • To boot from the disc, hold C (with the disc in) when turning on your Mac.
    • To boot from the USB, hold down alt on startup and click on the USB drive when you are prompted to choose a drive to boot from.
