“cannot load compatibility module support” when opening Dragon

Problem

When you open Dragon Naturally Speaking you get the following error:
“cannot load compatibility module support (GUID = {DD100203-6205-11cf-ab61-0000e8a28647})”

The GUID may not be the same as mentioned above.

Cause

One of your Desktop icons is unreadable by Dragon.

Solution

Try the following:

  • Remove special Desktop shortcuts:
    1. On your Desktop, find the user folder (named after you). If it is not there, skip to Step 4 in this section.
    2. Click on it once and press the Delete key.
    3. When prompted, click Yes. This will not delete any of your files.
    4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 above for the following items (if they exist):
Computer, Documents (or My Computer, My Documents).
  • Move all your Desktop shortcuts into a new folder
    • You could also try moving them one by one to isolate which icon is causing the issue with Dragon.
  • Remove any of the following conflicting items (as identified by Nuance) by right clicking the item and clicking “Remove from Desktop”:
    • HP Share-to-Web
    • Hyperwave Explorer
    • Lotus Document Manager Neighborhood
    • Sony Ericsson File Manager
    • Sony Erricson P800
    • Sony Erricson P900
    • Sony Erricson P910i
    • Sony PMB (Picture Motion Browser) Launcher
