Forgot Password on Mac

Problem

You are unsure of or have forgotten the password on your Mac. It may have been changed by someone else.

Solution

Follow the situation that applies to you:

You can login but sometimes get prompted for a password which you never set

When the password prompt comes up asking you to put it in, try just clicking OK without entering a password. Mac computers ask for passwords when needed even if one is not set. If that fails proceed to the steps below.

You can’t login as yourself but can log on as another Admin user

  1. Logon as the admin user.
  2. Click the Apple in the top left corner and click System Preferences.
  3. Click on Accounts.
  4. If the padlock is locked, click on it and enter the admin password for the account you are logged in as.
  5. Click on the account which you need to login to (left side of the screen).
  6. Click on the Reset Password… button (right side of the screen) and follow the instructions.
