DVD drive not detected

Problem

At least one of the following may apply:

  • Windows Explorer does not detect your CD / DVD drive.
  • When you look at the drive status in Device Manager, it may state Code 19, Code 31, or Code 39.
    • Uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers does not rectify the problem.

Solution

Easy Solution

  1. Open the Device Manager.
  2. Right click your disc drive and click Uninstall. Click No if asked to restart.
  3. Download and run this registry patch or follow the instructions below.
    (Right click the link, then click Save Target As / Save link as.)
  4. Click Yes to any prompts that appear.
  5. In Device Manager, right click on any item and click “Scan for hardware changes”.

Manual Solution

To manually apply the patch:

  1. Open the Device Manager.
  2. Right click your disc drive and click Uninstall. Click No if asked to restart.
  3. Click the Start button (Windows XP users should then click Run)
  4. Type regedit and press Enter. Click Continue or Yes if prompted.
  5. Navigate to:
  6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control > Class
  7. Under Class, find and click on this exact entry: “{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}”.
  8. On the right side, right click UpperFilters and click Delete.
  9. Do the same for the LowerFilters entry if it exists.
  10. Leave Upperfilters.bak and LowerFilters.bak alone if they are present.
  11. Close Registry Editor.
  12. In Device Manager, right click on any item and click “Scan for hardware changes”.
