Playback in Parallels is crackly or distorted

Problem

When using Parallels Desktop, the sound is distorted and crackling. However, in Mac OS X it is fine.

Solution

1. In Parallels, click Configure.
2. On the left hand side, under the Hardware category, click Sound.
3. Manually assign the Output and Input for the sound devices.
