Windows Not Genuine

Problem

On Windows Vista or 7, you have messages stating that your copy of Windows is not genuine and may be prompted to buy a license online.

Solution

Please note this solution uses the names used for options in Windows 7. The names may be slightly different on Vista.

First, you need to know your Windows Product Key. This can be found on the back of your Windows disc or as a sticker attached on the side, back or bottom of your computer:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Type slui and press Enter.
If a message may appear saying Windows has been successfully activated then you can stop reading.
If not, then follow the further steps.
  3. Click “Retype your product key”.
    • If this option is unavailable, follow these instructions:
      1. Click the Start button.
      2. Right click on Computer and click Properties.
      3. A new window will appear. At the bottom, click “Change product key”.
  4. You need to know your Windows Product Key. This can be found on the back of your Windows disc or as a sticker attached on the side, back or bottom of your computer.
  5. Enter the key and press Next to validate.

If that doesn’t work or you do not have the Internet you may also be able to activate by phone:

  1. If the option “Show me other ways to activate” is available, then click it.
  2. Enter your Product Key.
  3. Click the option to activate by phone.
  4. Choose your country and click Next.
  5. Follow the on screen instructions.
