Problem
A program called “Security Tool” appears on your computer which supposedly scans for viruses and tells you that your computer is infected. It asks for you to purchase the program in order to remove the infection. Your desktop background may have been changed and you are unable to run applications.
Security Tool is actually a virus itself preventing full use of your computer. It is a rogue program that pretends to be an antivirus in order to get your money.
Solution
- Hold down Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Keep it held down until a Task Manager appears. Security Tool will keep trying to close them but you should be able to get it to appear.
- Right click on Security Tool and click on the ‘Go To Process’ option.
- You will now be on the Processes tab with an item selected. Click the ‘End Process’ button.
- Security Tool will have stopped running and you will be able to open programs again. To fully remove it, Run a Malware Scan.
