"Application not found" when running a CD or DVD

Problem

When you insert a disc into your computer or try to open it from My Computer you get the following error:

“E:\

Application not found”

The disc may open without error if you right click the drive and select the Open or Autoplay option.

Cause

This can be the fault of a bad registry entry.

Solution

1. Click the Start button (then click Run if using Windows XP)
2. Type regedit and press Enter.
3. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows> CurrentVersion > Explorer.
4. Delete the MountPoints2 item.
5. Restart the computer.
