"Windows Explorer has stopped working" when accessing a USB drive

Problem

When you connect a USB drive to the computer and open it, you get the error “Windows Explorer has stopped working”. Additionally, it may run slow whilst accessing the drive and you may see “Not Responding” in the window.

Cause

This can be cause by Windows reading too many large video files.

Solution

Move any large video files (or folders containing them) from your Desktop to another location.
If that doesn’t work then move all the files on your Desktop to a folder on your hard drive.
