“You don’t have permission…” when saving documents opened from the Internet

Problem

When you open a file from a website such as a Word document or PowerPoint presentation using Internet Explorer and you try to use the “Save As” option you get the following error:

“You don’t have permission to save in this location.
Contact the administrator to obtain permission.

Would you like to save in the My Documents folder instead?”

Cause

This is caused by Internet Explorer’s Protected Mode.

Solution

You have two options:

  • Save files as opposed to opening them.
  • Disable Protected Mode (What does Internet Explorer protected mode do?)
    1. Press the Windows key + R.
    2. Type inetcpl.cpl and press Enter.
    3. Click the Security tab.
    4. Uncheck “Enable Protected Mode”.
    5. Click OK.
    6. You will need to restart Internet Explorer if it is open.
