Change quote style in Word (and other Office programs)

Problem

When you input quotes into Microsoft Word (or another Office application), they are converted into curved quotes (also know an typographer quotes or smart quotes).

Solution

You can turn this setting on or off by following these steps:

  1. Open the Options menu:
    • For Office 2007:
      1. Click the Office button in the top left of the window.
      2. In the bottom right of the menu that appears, click Word Options (or Excel Options, Powerpoint Options etc).
    • For Office 2010:
      1. Click File.
      2. Click Options.
  2. On the left, click Proofing.
  3. Click “AutoCorrect Options…” button.
  4. Click the “AutoFormat As You Type” tab.
  5. Find the first checkbox you see, labelled: “Straight quotes” with “smart quotes”.
  6. Uncheck the option to use “” for quote marks; check the option to use curved quotes.
