This will not work on Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) as that only uses a 64-bit Kernel.
Problem
When you plug your Olympus Dictaphone in to your Mac it may launch the Sonority software. However the device is not present in Sonority so you are unable to download files from it. The device may still appear on the Desktop as a mass storage device.
Cause
Currently, Olympus Sonority is unable to detect digital voice recorders on newer Mac models running a default kernel.
Solution
- Download and run our KernelSwitch application.
- If prompted asking if you want to open the file, click Open.
- If you don’t see the application then click the KernelSwitch icon (lightswitch) on the Dock.
- Click the “32-Bit” button.
- Enter your password if you have one and press Enter or click OK.
- Click the “Restart Now” button.
- Once restarted, reconnect your Dictaphone.
This will not affect the running of any 32-Bit or 64-Bit applications.
Used this fix 2 days ago for the first time – works a treat. Thanks Carl
Agree! Worked right away and I was in a tight spot. Thanks!!
You are good people! Thanks
This did work but I would like to know how it works and what if any effect it has on the rest of my mac. Do I need to change back to Default at any point in the future?
If you wanted to use a 64-bit kernel extension, then you would need to switch it back to 64-Bit or Default.
It’s probably something that you will never use but here is more information about kernel extensions and how to build your own:

Will this work with Mountain Lion?
I haven’t tested it but I can’t see why not.
Just tried this and it doesn’t appear to be working.
Can anyone help please
I will get our Support team to look into it. If you post a comment with your email, I can get them to get back to you.
Thanks for letting me know.
Dont want to post my email address to public. If you could respond to board it would be appreciated.
Just so you know, when you attach your email. it is not visible to the public.
Good Morning CP.
Could you let us know the following?
Click Apple -> System Preferences -> Users and groups -> Login Items
Do you see Device Detector in there?
HI
I can see the device detector in there but nothing in Sonority
I’m having the same issues as CP. First of all, using the KernelSwitch is not allowed by the new Mountain Lion “Gatekeeper”. Had to change the settings for that. But after having taken that hurdle, switching to the 32 Kernel didn’t seem to do the trick. Device Detector is active, so there should be no problem there.
Advice would be much appreciated!
After some reading, I’ve found that Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) only uses a 64-bit Kernel so the KernelSwitch application will not work I’m afraid.
Thanks for your help
Can you suggest any other work around ?
The latest update to Sonority (1.4.1) now supports Mountain Lion and my device is recognized again now! So this means that for now the issue seems to have been solved.
Hi all.. the Kernel switch link does not seem to be working any more. Can you upload it again? as I am now having issues with this and my it department has updated my Mac… an annoying challenge
