TrackPad not working correctly in Boot Camp

Problem

Using Boot Camp, the following features no longer work on the TrackPad:

  • Two finger clicks
  • Right clicking
  • Tap to click

Solution

Follow the heading which applies to you:

I have my Mac OS X Install Disc

  1. Running Windows, insert your Mac OS X Install disc.
  2. Navigate to the following file and run it (where D is the letter of your optical drive):
    • For 32-Bit Windows:
      • D:\Boot Camp\Drivers\Apple\AppleMultiTouchTrackPadInstaller.exe
    • For 64-Bit Windows:
      • D:\Boot Camp\Drivers\Apple\x64\AppleMultiTouchTrackPadInstaller64.exe
  3. Follow any prompts you see to reinstall the TrackPad.

I do not have a Mac OS X Install Disc

  1. On the Mac side, go to your Applications folder.
  2. Open the Utilities folder.
  3. Open the Boot Camp Assistant application.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Make sure the option “Download the Windows support software for this Mac” is selected and click Continue.
  6. Enter your password if you have one and press Enter.
  7. Once it has finished downloading you will be asked whether you want to save the files to a CD, DVD or external drive. Select an option and click Continue.
  8. You will then be asked to insert a disc or to select a save location. If you chose the external disk option in step 7 then make sure you save it there and not on your Mac partition.
  9. Once the files have been saved you can close the Boot Camp Assistant by pressing cmd + Q.
  10. Boot into the Windows side on your Mac.
  11. Insert your CD, DVD or External disk.
  12. Find the Drivers folder on there. It may be in a folder called Boot Camp.
  13. From there, open the Apple folder.
  14. Run the correct installer
    • For 32-Bit Windows:
      • Run the AppleMultiTouchTrackPadInstaller file inside the folder.
    • For 64-Bit Windows:
      1. Open the x64 folder.
      2. Run the AppleMultiTouchTrackPadInstaller64 file.
  15. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Hi thanks for tip – problem is I did a clean install of osx Lion then installed Win 7 64 bit – clicked on AppleMultiTouchTrackPadInstaller on the disc that was created from the download above and got an error that “you have run the 64 bit version of DPInst.exe on this machine. Contact the vendor that provided you with this package”

  2. Using these methods, I still can’t get tap-to-click working on Windows 7 64 bit running on Boot Camp. Having to press to mechanically click is horrible (constant and super noisy when I’m trying to work in a quiet environment); running Windows ever-so-much-more-slowly on Parallels just to be able to use the trackpad in my MacBook Pro is horrible too (so slow!). I really need tap-to-click on the windows side of Boot Camp.

  3. Same problem, and when I try to reinstall the multitouchtrackpad device using the MAC DVD, the installer tells me that the drivers have not been updated because no more recent version of the driver could be found.
    This problem is REALLY annoying. The Macbookpro is a great machine, but this is close to making me come back to a PC…

    1. Try this:

      1. Press the Windows key + R.
      2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
      3. In the list, right click on Boot Camp Services and click Uninstall.
      4. Follow the prompts to uninstall.
      5. Reinstall the Boot Camp drivers using the Mac Install disc.

      1. Except I cannot right-click because Win7 f&^ked up my trackpad. I can left click or move the pointer (but not both). Time to dig out something with a cord…
        You can avoid the need to boot back and forth by grabbing the Bootcamp drivers at http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
        At this time it’s at version 3.3 which includes both 32 and 64 bit versions.
