Holding the following keys when the Mac start up will give the effects listed:

Keys Effect
Mouse button Eject CD / DVD Drive
C Boot from Disc
Shift Safe Boot mode
Alt Select a boot volume
Cmd + S Single User Mode
Cmd + V VERBOSE Mode
