Dragon won’t dictate into Microsoft Word

Make sure that you always run Dragon Naturally Speaking before you run Word.
Choose the correct tab below for your version of Microsoft Word.

Word 2010 or 2007

  1. Go to your Microsoft Office folder.
    (Usually C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ or C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office)
  2. Open the Office12 or Office14 folder (number will depend on version).
  3. Find the file WINWORD.EXE. Right click on it and click Run as administrator.
  4. Once Word has loaded, click the Office button in the top left.
  5. Click on the Word Options button located in the bottom right of the menu.
  6. On the left, click Add-Ins.
  7. At the bottom of the menu, look for a dropdown box next to the word ‘Manage’.
  8. In the dropdown select ‘Disabled Items’ and click the Go button.
  9. Click once on “NatSpeak Word AddIn” then click the Enable button.
  10. Then click Close and restart Word.

Word 2003

  1. From within Microsoft Word click on Help -> About Microsoft Word
  2. Click on the ‘Disabled Items’ button.
  3. Click on “Addin Microsoft Word support dll (dgnword.dll)”
  4. Press the Enable button and close the remaining windows.
  5. Close and re-launch Word.

Futher Help
If all of the above fails then you will need to delete the default Word template:

  1. Close Word.
  2. Windows XP: Go to “C:\Documents and Settings\(your username)\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\”
    Windows Vista or newer: Go to “C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\”
  3. Now delete any normal.dot or normal.dotm files that you see.
Then open Word and try dictating again.
