“Word has stopped working” when you open Word

Problem

When you open Microsoft Word, an error appears saying Word stopped working and needs to close. Additional details may state “Problem Event Name: APPCRASH”.

Cause

There are some printer drivers that seem to cause the problem, most commonly manufactured by HP. It may also be due to a corrupt Word setting or install.

Solution

Try the following:

• Change the default printer to the XPS Writer:
1. Click the Start button (Windows XP users should then click Run).
2. Type control printers and press Enter.
3. Right click on “Microsoft XPS Document Writer” and click “Set as default printer”.
• Reset Word Settings.
• Repair Microsoft Office.
