Kaspersky 2009 updates to new version and asks for serial number

Problem

Your Kaspersky 2009 product reports that you need to update to the latest version and after doing so, it will demand a new serial number before it can work again.

Cause

Kaspersky 2009 products have been discontinued.

Solution

You could purchase a license for the latest version of Kaspersky but if you would rather not then keep reading.

If you have already updated Kaspersky to the latest version (2012 or above), then you will need to uninstall it:

1. Press the Windows Key + R. A run box will appear.
2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
3. Find your Kaspersky product in the list.
4. Right click on the entry and click Uninstall.
5. Follow the prompts to uninstall and restart when asked.

and then try one of the following:

• Download Kaspersky 2010 (v9) and install it.
• Install a free antivirus such as Microsoft Security Essentials.
